Used properly, it becomes a rehearsal for the mountain — not just another big workout.

Many athletes already do long days. They hike, run, ski tour, climb, scramble, or spend hours outside. But not all long days create the same value.

What will happen when the objective becomes long, slow, uncomfortable, and real?

The principle is not to copy someone else’s duration. The principle is to progress toward the demands of your objective.

The 7 Things to Test on a Long Mountain Day


A good long day should have a purpose.

Instead of simply writing “long hike” or “long run” in the plan, decide what you want to test.


1. Pacing

Start easier than you think.

Most mountain athletes do the opposite. They feel fresh, motivated, and excited, so they move too fast early. The price comes later.

Good pacing means the first third of the day should feel controlled, almost too easy. If you are already fighting in the first hours, the pace is probably too high.


2. Fueling

Do not wait until you are hungry.

On long mountain days, hunger often arrives late, especially in cold, heat, altitude or fatigue. Practice eating early and regularly.

The goal is not to find the perfect food in theory. The goal is to find what you can actually eat while moving.


3. Hydration

Many athletes drink less than they think.

Cold weather, wind and altitude can reduce thirst. Heat can increase losses dramatically. A long day helps you learn your real drinking habits.

Hydration should be practiced, not improvised.


4. Gear

Your gear should make the day simpler, not more complicated.

Use long days to test boots, socks, pack fit, poles, layers, gloves, food access, headlamp placement, rain protection and emergency items.

If something is annoying after three hours, it may become a real problem after eight.


5. Feet

Feet are performance equipment.

Blisters, hot spots, nail pain, wet socks, swollen feet and poor shoe choice can ruin a mountain objective. Long days are where you discover the truth.

Do not test new footwear close to the objective.


6. Descent

The descent is not an afterthought.

Descending tired requires eccentric leg strength, coordination, attention and patience. Many athletes train the climb but lose the day on the way down.

A good long day should include descent practice when the objective requires it.

How to Make a Long Day More Specific
