About - Behind Higher Ground
Oliver Gil
For over fifteen years, I have practiced in the mountains while balancing a demanding professional and family life.

From Personal Practice to Higher Ground
What began as a personal passion progressively evolved into increasingly ambitious mountain projects: long alpine days, technical ascents, high-altitude expeditions, and one-push efforts such as a solo ascent of Mont Blanc from the valley in a single push.
Over time, those experiences taught me something simple but fundamental...
Success in the mountains is rarely about doing more.
It is about preparing better.
That idea became the foundation of Higher Ground.
What is Higher Ground
A Different Approach to Mountain Preparation
Higher Ground was created to help mountain athletes prepare with more clarity, structure, and purpose.
Not through generic plans or short-term intensity, but through a sustainable approach built around:
-
the real demands of the objective
-
the real constraints of the athlete
Today, I am a certified UESCA Ultrarunning Coach, supporting athletes preparing for alpinism, mountaineering, high-altitude expeditions, trekking peaks, and mountain endurance goals.
Based in Barcelona, Higher Ground works with athletes internationally in English, French, and Spanish.

Built Around Real Life
My approach is shaped by both experience and reality.
I know what it means to train seriously while managing:
-
a full professional life
-
family commitments
-
limited time
-
imperfect conditions
Ambitious mountain objectives require more than motivation.
They require a preparation process that is coherent, progressive, and adapted to real life.
A Philosophy of Preparation
I believe mountain preparation should start with solid foundations
Aerobic base first
Robustness before performance
Progressive load over inconsistency
Strength that supports movement in the mountains
Long-term durability over short-term gains
Preparation is not about doing more.
It is about doing what matters — consistently.
More than training
Good coaching is not only about writing training sessions.
It is about helping athletes make better decisions:
-
choosing the right objective
-
understanding real demands
-
identifying weaknesses early
-
building a realistic progression
-
avoiding common mistakes
That is why Higher Ground is not only about training. It is about preparation as a whole.

Ways to Work Together
Depending on the athlete and the project, preparation may take different forms:
-
Individual coaching
-
Structured training plans with personal adaptation
